The Golden Rectangle

The "rule of thirds" in design, has a relationship to the "Golden Rectangle" in mathematics.

Also called the "Golden Ratio," this mathematical concept (related to the number Phi-1.6180339887 and known too as the "Golden Mean") has been used by artists since the Renaissance to explore aesthetic compositions that appeal to human nature.

It's one of those magical and serendipitous behaviors of the natural world (it repeatedly appears throughout biology and math) that gives you pause to think about unity and how everything's somehow connected to everything else. In other words, it's just fun to explore.
