____________________________________________________________________________________ BURST! Exhibition on view: February 1 - March 2, 2015
Reception: Saturday, February 14, 2015 – 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building
2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4
Miami, FL 33127
The University of Miami is pleased to present BURST! A Celebration of Arte Povera. Featuring artists Martin Casuso, Valeria Rocchiccioli and Troy Simmons. BURST pays homage to the Italian art movement Arte Povera. The exhibition showcases a "rebirth" of this radical art movement of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Through bursts of color, the use of found objects, recycled materials, and sheer creativity, the viewer will experience how Arte Povera has served as inspiration for Casuso, Rocchiccioli, and Simmons.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Martin Casuso
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Martin Casuso is the son of a Cuban Freudian analyst father and a Dutch artist mother. Creative from an early age, he has strong memories of building forts in the mangrove swamp of his childhood neighborhood in Coconut Grove. His work often involves a melding of childhood memory and adulthood interest in art history. Casuso received his Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Miami and his BFA from Florida International University.
Valeria Rocchiccioli
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Valeria Rocchiccioli uses mass-produced discarded objects as her main medium; Rocchiccioli's sculptures remind us that ordinary can become extraordinary. This is evident when the artist shifts the material's original intention of existence by weaving plastic bottles, caps and zip ties into unpredictable forms. The densely patterned and colorful sculptures draw inevitable comparisons to Sao Paulo's landscape, large population and diverse society. Rocciccioli received her MFA from the University of Miami and is represented by Now Contemporary Art Gallery.
Troy Simmons
Born in Texas, resides in Miami, Florida. Simmons states, “My inspiration is drawn from surroundings, situations and experiences I encounter daily. Everything from a weed growing through a crack in the sidewalk, to the people in the isles of the local grocery store, all stimulate my creativity. My latest work reflects the diversity seen in the tapestry of South Florida. Layers of ideas, people, and cultures all mixed in one urban environment.” Simmons holds a degree from Oklahoma State University in Architectural Design.
BURST! will be on view from February 1st to March 2nd, 2015 at the UM Art Gallery located at the Wynwood Building 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4, Miami, FL 33127. A full schedule of exhibitions can be viewed at www.as.miami.edu/art. Gallery hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am to 6pm. *Hours may be subject to change, please call (305) 284-3161 to confirm times. Appointments and Private Tours available. Good afternoon!
I am the program coordinator for Camp Erin South Florida, which is a children’s grief camp for ages 6-17 years old. We are having our first camp of the year during the last weekend of this month, Feb. 27 – Mar. 1st in Homestead, FL. While at camp the children get to engage in many interactive activities, including art therapy, music therapy, nature walks, camp fires, games, and much more. Right now I am looking for artists who would be interested in supporting our camp as a volunteer in the following ways:
· Advising with me on ideas for quick “walk by” art projects for the children to contribute to while at camp (any age)
· Coming to observe camp for 2-3 hours during our weekend and then going home to create a piece inspired by their time at camp to donate for auction at our fundraisers in the fall (any age)
o For this the person would also attend the fundraiser where their piece would be displayed so that the attendees can meet the artist
· Assisting with art-based activities at camp (must be 18+)
This is a really great opportunity for any artists who have a passion for giving back and it will also allow them to make themselves visible in the community among many important people at our fundraising events. I am requesting that you forward this opportunity to other faculty, staff, and students that would be interested in supporting our program. For more information you can visit our website at CampErinSouthFlorida.org. Anyone interested in volunteering can complete a volunteer application, which I will provide upon request. I also have a flyer which can be posted in the school and forwarded to potential volunteers.
If you have any questions or would like more materials, please contact me! Thank you!
