Submitting Your Files for Evaluation in Art109

Whenever you upload (or start) a file onto the class server and/or email it to me you must INCLUDE YOUR LAST NAME IN THE FILE so that once it is downloaded to my PC I am able to identify its owner. By not doing so you run the risk of forfeiting your grade for the assignment.

You may email me jpgs or pdfs but you must ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PSD FILE AVAILABLE  in your server folder so I can see your work in its original form and at the best quality. KEEP YOUR LAYERS INTACT for evaluation. Also in your folder make sure you keep all original images that you worked with.

Also, never submit a file for evaluation that is less than 200 ppi. Images taken from the Internet are 72 ppi AND MUST BE RESIZED BEFORE WORKING ON THEM. The approved resolution is 240 or 300.

For working ideally in Photoshop, I suggest working in RGB and converting jpgs to tiffs before making any local changes. (PS will thereafter always save the file you work on as a photoshop (psd) file, which is fine.) PSD and tiff files seldom fit through campus email and should be converted before sending to me.

For the best results quality when you print on the campus printer you want to resize your image at the final dimensions, convert resolution to 300 ppi, and convert color mode to CMYK before printing.

ABOUT OUR SERVER

The server named "Hanger" should appear on your machine's desktop whenever you are signed in as "student" and can be accessed simply by double-clicking. If the icon does not appear, open your finder window (click the blue smiley face in the dock), select art-fileserver and double click on the folder "Hanger."

Inside "Hanger" locate the folder for your class, indicated by the time we meet (in military time) and open this. You should create a folder for yourself in here with your last and first name (or nickname).

IN YOUR SERVER FOLDER PLEASE create a folder for each module and for each assignment within that module. DO NOT RANDOMLY THROW ALL YOUR WORK INTO ONE FOLDER.

SCANNING

The General Scanning formula is to multiply your Output X Scaling:

OUTPUT RESOLUTION X Scaling of Original=Scan resolution (SPI)

*Output resolution is the image’s final intended resolution (for print, web, video, etc.)
Example: To scan a 4x6 photo to print at a resolution of 300 ppi at 8x12 the formula is--

300 ppi (Output Resolution) X 2 (Scaling of Original)

= 600 spi (Scan Resolution)
