In our evening class recently we talked about Dorothea Lange, the Works Progress Administration photographer/documentarian from the Great Depression and colleague of Walker Evans.
If you really want to understand the importance of value, clarity, and detail in black and white photography, look Lange up on You Tube and see some of the many tributes to her. Her photos are, of course, also powerfully composed to tell a story.
This weekend PBS re-aired a documentary on Lange by her granddaughter that you can view online now at http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/dorothea-lange/watch-full-film-dorothea-lange-grab-a-hunk-of-lightning/3260/
