THIS ASSIGNMENT REPLACES THE WORD ART ASSIGNMENT AND IS DUE ON THU OCT. 30.
For your second Illustrator project I'd like you to take a stab at designing a logo for one of two organizations which have approached us and asked for our assistance.
Follow the guidelines you were given for the first logo project and create a trademark-and-type identity, but do a little research on the organization you choose. I'm providing some basic information about each of the 2 groups below.
1. MusicReach at UM's Frost School of Music:
http://www.miami.edu/frost/index.php/frost/community/frost_musicreach/
(Frost School of Music undergraduate and graduate students serve as mentors, teachers, and role models to K-12 students at area schools in this program. The UM students coach younger musicians and get the chance to develop and enhance their music teaching and performance skills in authentic situations to better prepare them for a future as successful, aware, and socially responsible members of the professional music community.)
MusicReach has a new director (Dr. Melissa Lesniak) who so far has only commissioned the flyers shown below for the program. Both flyers play off the word "reach"--one using an impossibly high musical note in notation and the other using a musical staff that serves as an abstract ladder in the background.
2. Greater Miami Youth Symphony
(The Greater Miami Youth Symphony is a 900-student member organization with 4 string orchestras, a renowned youth symphony, two bands (including jazz and concert), and several chamber ensembles (mostly string). They sponsor a youth musician competition each year and provide preparatory classes and summer camps at a minimal cost plus free instruments to hundreds of Miami children each year.)
GMYS has an existing type-based logo which appears below, but they would like an updated look that incorporates a palm tree or other image that "says Miami" along with their name and something that communicates "music." They just commissioned a sign for the Jazz Band that they like and which appears below. A violin is often the symbolic representation for the group as a whole, but might be used in conjunction with a french horn, trumpet, or other instrument as GMYS also has a new director (Dr. Milton Laufer) who would like to see the group's brass sections grow stronger. (Dr. Laufer is himself a renowned pianist.) GMYS has always had a strong reputation as a strings organization, and will want to maintain that reputation while growing in other areas. They need something to represent the whole organization and they would also like the logo to work well with their acronym (GMYS) when they choose not to use the whole name with the trademark.
