A Message from the Art Dept. IT Manager

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR STUDENTS TO INSTALL SOFTWARE ON THE LAB 151 COMPUTERS. This is in line with the policy prohibiting installing software upon UM-owned workstations.

Below are quoted excerpts from the acceptable use policy and user obligations:

"…The University of Miami computing systems and network are resources provided for all members of the University community. Because computing and network resources are shared, individuals should use the systems responsibly in pursuit of academic and administrative functions… Users may not obstruct any others’ work by using unnecessarily large amounts of system resources (such as disk space, output devices, CPU time, and network bandwidth) or deliberately causing any machine to crash or shut down. Given the finite capacity of available systems, Users must be responsible in their use of resources so as not to interfere unreasonably with the activity of other users."

"Users should use the systems and network in a way that promotes the University of Miami’s academic mission. Accordingly, when it is necessary to perform systems administration, or, in order to protect the University of Miami’s legal interests, network administrators may access all files and data on the University Computing Systems and Network. In addition, the University may monitor and/or review any user ID, user activity, files, and data on the University systems and network, “freeze” or remove access to any files or data which the University reasonably believes violates User Obligations in accordance with applicable University policies. "

If there is a piece of software currently on your device that you believe may infringe upon policy, contact me please.  If you are one of the few that has admin rights to install software, please refrain from installation. This is to ensure an uniform computing experience for everyone. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me directly in my office during the hours aforementioned. I look forward to serving all of you.

In terms of general IT stuff -
  • The new art server is available in the classroom "cloud"  and will be explained in class..
  • We have NINE wireless spots. They can be accessed with SecureCanes and WirelessCanes. Be advised that if you are doing University business, you are to use SecureCanes. Additionally, in the future students will be able to print wirelessly through SecureCanes to our printers (assuming that the firewalls are setup). If however you’re doing something more casual, use WirelessCanes.
  • Printing from classrooms is available via Uprint. The default printer is located in the hall near the front door of the building.
  • If you are a declared art major, Adobe Creative Cloud software for personal use can be downloaded from our server. Your cane user id and password should provide you with free access. See me for instructions.
  • Lastly, my hours are M-F, on the first floor of the building, last office to the left, but I do answer emails much better than other forms of communication.
Many thanks,
Dwayne Hoffman
