Using Different Layer Modes

When choosing a layer blend other than "normal" in Photoshop, here is some description you may find useful...

Normal is often referred to as the default mode or threshold.
Choosing this mode will not alter your imagery.

Dissolve results in a random replacement of the pixels, producing a dissolved effect.

Darken selects the base or blend color (whichever is darker) as the result color.
Multiply multiplies the base color by the blend color, so the result color is always darker.

Color Burn darkens the base color to reflect the blend color by increasing the contrast.

Linear Burn darkens the base color to reflect the blend color by decreasing the brightness.

Darker Color displays the lower value color.

Lighten selects the base or blend color (whichever is lighter).Screen multiplies the inverse of the blend and base colors. The result color is always a lighter color.

Color Dodge brightens the base color to reflect the blend color by decreasing the contrast.

Linear Dodge brightens the base color to reflect the blend color by increasing the brightness.

Lighter Color displays the higher value color.

Overlay multiplies or screens the colors, depending on the base color. The highlights and shadows of the base color are preserved.

Soft Light darkens or lightens the colors, depending on the blend color.

Hard Light multiplies or screens the colors, depending on the blend color. The effect looks like a bright spotlight.

Vivid Light burns or dodges the colors by increasing or decreasing the contrast, depending on the blend color.

Linear Light burns or dodges the colors by decreasing or increasing the brightness, depending on the blend color.

Pin Light replaces the base color with the blend color, sometimes producing no change, depending on the tonal values.

Hard Mix adds the red, green and blue channel values of the blend color to the RGB values of the base color, therefore changing all pixels to primary colors—red, green, blue, cyan, yellow, magenta, white or black.

Difference subtracts either the blend color from the base color or the base color from the blend color, depending on which has the greater brightness value.

Blending with white inverts the base color values, and blending with black produces no change.

Exclusion creates an effect that is similar to Difference, but lower in contrast.

Hue creates a result color with the brightness and saturation of the base color and the hue of the blend color.

Saturation creates a result color with the brightness and hue of the base color and the saturation of the blend color.

Color creates a result color with the brightness of the base color and the hue and saturation of the blend.

Luminosity creates a result color with the hue and saturation of the base color and the brightness of the blend color. This mode creates the inverse effect of Color mode.

Also, if you're using cut and paste or the lasso to create an object on top of other layers, here is a way to soften your edges...

Feathering edges of a selection
To soften or blur the edges of a selection you have made with one of the Lasso Tools, go to Select>Feather. You can set the Feather Radius as desired—the higher the number, the greater the feathering effect. Some of the details on the edge of the selection will be lost. You really notice the effect of this tool when you move the selection to your desired spot.
